ARAPAHOE COUNTY FINALIZES 2016 PRIMARY ELECTION WITH CANVASS  

The Arapahoe County Clerk and Recorder’s Office completed the June 28, 2016 Primary Election, with the results certified by the County Board of Canvassers on July 8.

The election determined the Democratic and Republican Party candidates that will appear on the Nov. 8 General Election ballot to vie for local, state and federal seats. See official results at www.arapahoevotes.com. 

Voter turnout in Arapahoe County was 26.78 percent of all 253,968 registered voters who were affiliated with the Democratic and Republican Parties as of June 28. Unaffiliated voters and those registered with minority parties were not eligible to vote unless they declared a major party affiliation by Election Day.

Arapahoe County issued mail ballots to all active registered voters who were affiliated with the two major political parties. The County also offered in-person services at four Voter Service and Polling Centers in Aurora, Byers, Centennial and Littleton June 20-28. In total, 68,007 ballots were cast, of which 99.5 percent were mail-in ballots, while 337 voters (0.50 percent) voted in-person at a Voter Service and Polling Center. Total turnout was 53 percent Republican voters and 47 percent Democratic voters.

The Primary Election was the first election conducted by Arapahoe County using Colorado’s new uniform voting system, which features improved election management software and hardware, accessible touch-screen tablets, and desktop scanners for counting the vote. 

The Board of Canvassers was required to canvass the results within 13 days of the Primary Election. Board members include Clerk and Recorder Matt Crane as the Primary Election Official, Arapahoe County Democratic Party Chair Patricia Shaver and Arapahoe County Republican Party Chair Joy Hoffman. The Board’s duties included reviewing:

• The name of each candidate receiving votes, the office and the total number of votes received;
• The number of mail-in ballots cast, including the number accepted and rejected; and
• The number of flat ballots cast, including those cast and printed from new electronic voting tablets.

Sixty percent of all Primary Election mail ballots were returned to one of the County’s 26 ballot drop-off locations, while 40 percent were returned via the U.S. Postal Service. No provisional ballots were counted.
